At this point, you have probably heard all about Bitcoin. Bitcoin is built on blockchain technology, but it is not all there is to Blockchain. There also several types of blockchains, such as Ethereum, Hyperledger, and others. Several components make up the Blockchain. But for this post, we will discuss just the standard blockchain technology that Bitcoin utilizes.

They consist of:

  1. A distributed ledger
  2. Blockchain nodes
  3. Miners
  4. Public or private blockchains

The most significant concept to grab hold of for Blockchain is that it is decentralized.  This means that the transactions and data you generate are not held in one central location. An example of a centralized network could be Facebook.  To participate in this social media service, you upload a good portion of your data such as name, location, age, and gender.  You provide your likes and dislikes, and you even upload personal photos. All of this information and data sits on their servers, which means that they have complete ownership and rights to use as they see fit.  If Facebook goes out of business, something that may seem unlikely but weirder things have happened, you could lose all access to everything on their centralized platform.
